What is a futon mattress?

The futon originated in Japan and is characterized by its simple and minimalist design. At Karup Design, we have given the futon a Danish twist: Our mattresses are designed as sleeping mattresses – they are thicker, have different cores, and are available in several comfort levels. All with a focus on the flexibility and minimalism of the futon.

The futon is often placed directly on a bed frame or on tatami mats, giving you a clean, simple look in the bedroom – combined with high functionality.

More than 30 years of experience.

At Karup Design, we have been working with futon mattresses for more than three decades. This makes us some of the most experienced in the industry when it comes to this particular type of mattress – and we are proud of that.

We know what makes a good futon. We know how it should be constructed to retain its shape. And we know how you can get the most out of it – both when you sleep and when you just want to relax.

For us, a futon is not just a mattress. It is a statement. A conscious choice. When you choose a futon from Karup Design, you are not just choosing design and function. You are choosing experience.

THE MATERIALS USED IN THE FILLING

In this section, you can learn more about the filling material used in our futon mattresses for beds. Each material has advantages that improve your sleeping comfort.

COTTON

Due to the nature of cotton it has been used in futon mattresses since the beginning of time. It adjusts itself to the contours of the body and supports it along its entire lenght. Cotton absorbs moisture produced during the night and during the day air can circulate and evaporate the moisture. The cotton in our futon mattresses is a completely natural material.

COCONUT

Coconut plates are used to create more firm futon mattresses. The plates are made from soften coconut fibers combined by using latex. Their structure allows the air to easily pass through, meaning that the mattress is constantly ventilated. Coconut fibres are a hard material resistant to moisture - they do not absorb water.

LATEX - FOAM

The raw materials used in the production of latex is the milk obtained from rubber trees. Thanks to its elasticity and softness it adjusts itself to the body and its structure allows the mattress to be continiusly ventilated. The material has many beneficial points: it is dust-free, hygenic, highly ergonomic, heat-insulating, breathable, long-lasting and durable.

POLYFOAM

Polyurethane foam is well-known thanks to its softness and lightness. It will provide light support and a soft surface to sleep on. When slept on, it contours to the shapes of your body, and during the day it will recover to its original shape.

HORSEHAIR

Horsehair has its own efficient and built-in ventilation system. So you'll have a futon mattress that insulates against the cold and simultaneously ensures that heat and moisture are channelled away. This creates a dry and comfortable sleeping environment. Horsehair also provides you better support when you sleep.

WOOL

Wool is temperature-regulating and therefore works very well for futon mattresses. It helps keep you warm when it's cold, but can also cool your body when it's hot. It absorbs odour and moisture and directs sweat away from the body – so you sleep at just the right temperature. The wool in our futon mattresses also helps to ensure a good climate in bed.

WHAT'S INSIDE OUR SOFA BED MATTRESSES?

Now you know more of the different fillings of our bed mattresses.
The fillings of our sofa bed mattresses are all alike. The only thing differing is the sizes of the sofa bed mattresses.

MIXED
WASTE
FILLING

We use waste fabric from
mattress production.
Giving it a new life and purpose
after being used in our futon
sofa bed mattresses.

When buying a Karup Design sofa bed, you can be sure that the futon mattress's filling is fabric waste from mattress production. A core of polyfoam in the mattress makes the comfort more firm when sitting and sleeping. The waste fabric consists of cotton, polyester, threads, and scrap fabric and has been tested according to TÜV.
