A mattress with history – and edge
The futon has its roots in Japan, where it has been used for centuries as a simple, natural, and space-saving solution for sleeping. Originally, futons were rolled up and stored in cupboards during the day – a symbol of minimalism and functionality in one. Today, the futon tradition lives on, but in a reinterpreted, modern form.
For more than 30 years, we at Karup Design have cultivated and refined the craftsmanship behind futons. It is a tradition that we proudly continue today – all our futons are handmade in Poland with an eye for detail and respect for the honest, natural look. We mainly use materials such as cotton, latex, coconut fiber, and horsehair – and build mattresses that provide a firm, supportive, and authentic sleeping experience.

The unique experience of sleeping on a futon
A futon mattress is known for its characteristic firmness and good support, which is generally firmer than regular foam and spring mattresses. Sleeping on a futon is a very special experience. The firm support gives the body a natural and healthy sleeping position, which is often preferred by those who want an alternative to softer mattresses. At the same time, the futon brings an earthy and honest feeling to the bedroom – a connection to a simpler way of living.
Why do people love futons?
The futon has had a renaissance – and it's easy to see why. It's unique, retro, and cool without trying too hard. Place it on one of our platform beds and you'll be right in the middle of the latest interior design trend, where Nordic calm meets Japanese minimalism. It's low, simple, and easy to fall head over heels for – literally.
But the futon isn't just nice to look at. It provides firm, steady support and keeps its shape for years – even after many hours of sleep, reading, or long, slow weekend mornings. You get honest comfort, created from primarily natural materials that do exactly what they are supposed to do. And that feel right, every single day.
The futon is honest. It hides nothing. It is what it claims to be: a genuine, handmade product, created from layers upon layers of cotton, latex, and love.
Futons have lived in the shadow of foam and spring mattresses for years – but they deserve the spotlight. We reject the idea that futons are hard, primitive, or only suitable for guest beds. The futons you find in our store are carefully composed, well thought out, and created for everyday needs. They are for those who want something different. Something honest. Something original.
